The down-home barbed wit that Mr. Wright imbues into Adam’s character is lovable and a little addictive once you’re accustomed to it. The back and forth self-deprecating, yet staunchly defiant, personality would seem a conflict in most protagonists, but is a sarcastic acceptance of his inability to kowtow to those who feel they are his betters; a defiant line in the sand that comes across as noble in its somewhat unconformist delivery. Think Jim Butcher without the paranormal aspects.
Adam’s old military buddy has been put behind bars for murder and has even confessed. Case closed, most would think, but a coded message is given to him, letting him know he didn’t do it, and that he needs a miracle.
Adam calls upon lively, rich characters to help him get to the bottom of this mystery, holding nothing back, except his attempts to appease his wife Jill, who seems a little kooky, but is rather an honest portrayal of how marriages have their own rhythm.
The dialogue is genuine, if a little on the strange side, but this parlays into the characteristics of the protagonist. A detective series that has rough and tumble characters that tell it like it is while keeping you in stitches at Adam’s take on it all.
