This Doesn’t Happen In The Movies, A Reed Ferguson Mystery

I’ve always considered it a shame that the detective noir era of books somehow went away at the close of Bogart and Bacall. A distinct texture of read, its crisp first-person point-of-view bringing to mind fog-filled alleyways overhung with flickering street lamps.

Crack the cover open and first up is Reed Ferguson, a detective with his own idea of right and wrong, on his first official case. As per requisite of the genre, it involves a long-legged beauty with trouble written all over her. The first chapter read, I grabbed my mental fedora and settled in. I knew trouble was afoot the moment the woman walked into his office.

Oh how I’ve missed the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characters that saw me with a flashlight in the dead of night flipping pages to see what happened next. Thank you Ms. Pawlish for bringing back to life this long-lost art of the detective battling against all odds and getting to the bottom of things.

I’d let you in on further chapters, but wouldn’t dare let on to what was going on. A must-read for all who consider Bogey to be their hero.

This book was given to me for the express purpose to review and this action in no way influenced my opinion on it whatsoever.
