Ash, the protagonist, is religiously raised and has very firm beliefs about the world.

Enter a bright light in the sky and the abbey he resides in turned to rubble within moments. This spawns a world trekking exploration of survival and dilemmas for his companions and himself.

I especially liked the character named Steed who, with generous usage of the vernacular, proved himself to be just as good or better than Ash at many things though his methods were admittedly left of center.

The book takes you on many trials of the companions and then ends on a note that I would have preferred to have come out differently. It’s a fresh angle on the traveling story and one that is humorous in many places. The dialogue felt genuine, the characters seemed real.

Mr. Maternowski is a capable writer that can spin a good yarn, but be forewarned that this is not a happily-ever-after.
